Julian Assange: Power to the People

The embarrassment that Julian Assange has brought upon such powerful people caused Assange to be famous worldwide. If it’s not obvious enough, you are getting out smarted. Many non-supporters of Wikileaks and Assange state that he is only trying to start problems. They believe he has created a form of terrorism by showing the public material that the government rather keep secretive. However, why should the government have anything to hide from their own citizens? This seems to be the mindset of Julian Assange. He is revolutionary; for he did something no man has done before and has altered modern journalism forever. He simply out smarted the government, revealing the truth and what lies beneath our system of governments around the world. Like many say, maybe Assange did this for fame, for attention, for terrorism; I believe he did it for the wellbeing of society, to convey secrets that are hidden within the government.

As all Americans know, not everyone uses a condom and there are many ways to get around using one. Julian Assange was accused of rape because the woman stated he did not use a condom. This argument seems unimportant and pointless in such a vital case when looked upon through a realistic eye. Americans are not naïve; everyone knows women have sex without condoms all the time, even in Sweden. Not only American girls, it’s women worldwide. Yes, that means you too Swedenettes. These women do not want to get in trouble for helping out with Julian Assange’s process. But then again, who would? Therefore, putting all the attention on Assange seemed to be the perfect plan in order to distract others from their wrong doings. They made themselves fall as the victims when the real victim is Julian Assange.

Furthermore, the sexual assault accusations should have never been involved throughout Assange’s case in the first place. Maybe its only coincidence, but as the Wikileaks case was formed, these accusations were revealed during the same time. It seems as if the American government believes their citizens are naïve once again. A form of communism can be recognized throughout this whole ordeal. As they punish Assange by using their power, they manage to create a sexual assault claim on him as well. The people with power have manipulated a great amount of people to follow and trust their system, as communism works its magic in controlling the thoughts of the people. They have manipulated their way into the media in order to brainwash individuals. Once again, using their sneaky ways and power to make everyone believe they know what is best. Using their power to cover up what really is going on and putting him through house arrest, accusing him of rape so they have a story behind their doings, or in other words, punishment for revealing the truth.

The case with Julian Asssange as finally opened an opportunity to glimpse at the form of communism seen within the government. The government and powerful people uses their great amount of power is several ways, such as to protect their citizens, form an economy, and to create democracy. However, this case with Julian Assange is the turning point in realizing that this power is being taken advantage of. Not only did the government use the media to accuse Assange of sexual assault because of the embarrassment he brought upon them, they also used the sexual accusations to distract the public from the truth that was previously revealed. They took advantage of their power while creating a distraction and an attempt to brainwash society; communism. How can a democratic government ever be trusted to truly be a democracy anymore? What happened to the freedom of people? Throughout the years, governments have experimented many tactics of controlling their society in some positive way, but negative as well. In the past, many forms of propaganda has been formed by the government in order to make their society believe a certain idea, theory, or concept. This completely defeats the purpose in living in a democracy if ones ideas are being controlled and if everything is not put on the table from the start.

Assange deserves to win the Nobel Peace Prize, which he was recently nominated for. This honor should be rewarded to Assange due to how the information given off Wikileaks provided learning about war crimes, corruption, human rights, and the freedom of speech. Personally, I wouldn’t be surprised if the American government used their powers to diminish this nomination all together and claim he raped another women. Assange should be allowed this nomination without any bad regards. He had simply published this information with his freedom of speech and intention to reveal secrets that he believes society should know. He did not seek out this classified information; therefore he is only a middleman who did nothing wrong. There are rules against officials and soldiers to reveal classified information, but not publishers. This Nobel Peace Prize may seem ironic to many people around the world due to how he created problems. However, society only took it the wrong way. He had good intentions by putting all information out on the table with no secrets to hide. It is debated whether society should know everything in the first place. I believe if America claims there is nothing to hide, why not share it with the public? We are the citizens and have a right to know what is happening with our government. This is a democracy, am I correct? We should be striving to achieve “power to the people”. Individuals who claim that the actions of Assange are performed by the force of terrorism are only paranoid and unfamiliar with the concepts of freedom of speech, globalization, and truth. I agree that some aspects relate to a form of terrorism due to several international problems that have occurred in result of Wikileaks; however, why blame Assange? If this information is real and the truth, why hide anything? Citizens have equal rights to know what is happening in their society.

All the side stories are only distractions to take attention away from the main situation: the truth revealed through Wikileaks. Does it really matter if he did or did not rape a girl? That is only a distraction to take away from the real situation going on. Moreover, those accusations do not interfere with the information he released on Wikileaks or his mindset on revealing the behind the scenes truths hidden by the government. For instance, the king of pop, Michael Jackson, was accussed of sexual assault on minors. However, this did not interfere with his success as a music artist. Fans all around the world did not let a silly situation distract from his honorable music and career. Everyone will always honor the revolutionary artist he was for years and years to come. This relates to Julian Assange in many aspects. Even though accusations were brought upon Assange for sexual assault, his success must overpower any negative aspects in his life. And as I say success, I do refer to Assange’s success in publishing information that is vital for the public to understand what is truly going on with their government. Society should not fall into the trap that the government has created.

Assange is a revolutionary figure in the world of journalism. He has changed the system journalism for years and years to come because he surpassed the limits by far, pushing people to think in a different way. Assange has begun a new era of publishing information that is crucial to society on many levels, forcing the public to think in a more open-minded state. Journalists around the world will push the limits even further and not be limited to speak their mind in any way. The world has reacted to this change in mixed ways, either supporting the change or not. Many people do not react to change very well, as they are content with how the system works and stick to the same routine and ideas. This can explain why they do not support Assange’s new, blunt idea of publishing. They may make fun of him. On the other hand, if there was no change in the world, we would still be living in the medieval times. Assange is bringing upon a new change in the world; a new era where the people come first and work together with the government, no secrets attached. Assanges’s strategy is one to create peace, but the world seemed to take change the wrong way. Blaming Assange is wrong. The world should not need to teach Assange a lesson, nevertheless, this is a life lesson of their own: realize reality.

  1. Whoa! What about all that typography stuff we learned? What about breaking up paragraphs and using images? Right now it clumps together something first. But obviously you did hear the hyperlinks lesson -- you did a good job on that.

Who is "you" in second sentence?

    By non-supporters you mean critics.

First line of second paragraph really throws the reader for a loop. Take the reader along carefully, prepare them for your ideas. I think the idea is that you can't have sex without a condom with someone who insists on a condom. It's a bit more nuanced than you make it out to be.

Don't bring up rhetorical Devil term of communism. Misconception of idea. Maybe McCarthyism -- but this is one person, not a cultural sweep.

You don't give any evidence that the rape allegations were connected to Wikileaks. You have to support your ideas with proofs. WHat reason do you have to believe that they are connected other than timing? It might be a post hoc ergo prompter hoc fallacy to assert the connection without proof.

Nobel Peace Prize is an audacious claim, but you don't really support that he deserves it. What about comparing him to previous prize winners and establishing he is at least as deserving?

Second to last paragraph is a very good point: what should our attention truly be on? But I'm not sure Michael Jackson is a good comparison. For one, pedophilia is a more serious charge than having consensual sex without a condom, and two Jackson is widely regarded as guilty of that charge, unlike Assange. However, you're right to divide the actions from the person.

Good TS for last paragraph, but you don't follow it up well. Why not try to get concrete on what will happen in the future with journalism? How will this change it? Right now your claims are a bit vague.

  2. Overall, you have some good Topic Sentences, but you really struggle with supporting your ideas. Work on all the different ways to back up a claim: logic, pathos, anecdotes, evidences, quotes, statistics, etc.
